I didn’t get a lot of reading done in October as we were on our Mediterranean Odyssey cruise – which I’m still trying to complete blogging about. And, obviously, I’m behind in posting my monthly reading as well. And so it goes.

Wanting Daisy Dead by Sue Watson

This was a selection from Amazon’s First Reads.

From the Amazon synopsis:

Twenty years ago, student Daisy Harrington went out for the evening and never came home. Her body was found a week later. The killer was caught. Case closed.

Now, on what would have been her fortieth birthday, her five university housemates are invited to a weekend gathering. None of them want to go. But none of them can refuse—the invitation makes it clear that if they don’t attend, the past they’ve spent two decades hiding will finally come to light.

Because the man convicted of Daisy’s murder was innocent. And one of the five has known this all along. As the weekend unfolds, the truth threatens to finally be revealed…

They all wanted Daisy dead, but one wanted it more. The question is…who? And why?

As the saying goes, “with friends like this, who needs enemies?”. In these days of reality TV and true crime podcasts, this plot line fits right in as the “friends” find themselves the subject of one such podcast.

The Marlow Murder Club by Robert Thorogood

We watched the first season of the series on PBS’s Masterpiece and I decided to read the book and compare it. The series follows the book very closely with only a few minor changes in some characters.

Per the book and the show, the main character is the somewhat reclusive Judith Potts – a whiskey-drinking, crossword puzzle author, Thames River nude swimming 77-year-old living in an old mansion on the river in the town of Marlow.

When she hears her neighbor being shot while she’s swimming, she decides to investigate for herself when the police can’t find a body. A local dog walker and the vicar’s wife end up as the second and third members of the “club” and the investigation is on – much to the dismay of the local police.

I enjoyed the book and the Masterpiece series (which has two seasons now). I’ll probably read the rest of the books in the series eventually.

Until next time, read what pleases you!
