Note 85 – Montana Adventure – Whitefish

Today we decided to drive 10-15 minutes northwest to the town of Whitefish, Montana. With a population estimated to be approaching 10,000, it is almost twice the size of Columbia Falls.

But, first, Chef Keith prepared our breakfast – scrambled eggs, toast, and bacon – cooked on this fabulous griddle outside, so it didn’t stink up the house or splatter grease everywhere.

Whitefish is a resort town with summer fun on Whitefish Lake, a natural lake which is 5.2 square miles (13 km2) with a maximum length of 5.8 miles (9.3 km), a width of 1.4 miles (2.3 km) and a depth of 233 feet (71 m). The nearby slopes provide mountain-biking trails in summer and ski trails in the winter. We walked along the main street noting all the historical markers on almost all of the buildings from the early 1900s. There were the typical tourist gift shops, art galleries, high-end stores, restaurants, plus candy and ice cream shops.

We ate lunch in one of the local restaurants, then decided to drive along Whitefish Lake. We drove as far as we could along the eastern side of the lake until we reached the end of the road on the north side and returned the way we came. It was a pretty drive, we passed a state park, but most of the property along the lake is privately owned.

We returned to the house to read, process pictures, snack for dinner, play our nightly games of 313, and search for the Northern Lights (we didn’t see them though there was a very slight chance).
